A Port Moody family was startled awake over the weekend by an intruder in their home.

Port Moody Police believe a man got into the Bedingfield Street home at about 3 a.m. May 17 by reaching through an open window and opening a sliding door. The man fled the home after a struggle; he's described as six feet tall with a muscular build and wearing a balaclava, black jeans and a black hoody.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 604-461-3456.

Police are also reminding residents that, even as the weather warms up, open windows provide an easy access point for thieves.

They suggest reviewing your windows' security, including any weak points, access points, maintenance issues and surrounding lighting.

Window security can be improved by nailing or screwing it shut (unless it's used as a fire exit), replacing keyless latches with a keyed latch or slide bolt, fitting a piece of wood into a sashless window track or using bars or grillwork on basement windows. Additional options include fixing shatter-resistant film or Lucite (high impact acrylic sheeting) to windows.
