Thieves target catalytic converters at Port Coquitlam car dealership

Coquitlam RCMP are asking for the public's assistance after the theft of $60,000 worth of parts from a car dealership over the weekend.

Coquitlam RCMP are asking for the public's assistance after the theft of $60,000 worth of parts from a car dealership over the weekend.

During the overnight period between April 5 and 6, crooks broke into the fenced lot of a dealership in the 2900-block of Christmas Way and stole a large number of catalytic converters from diesel trucks.

"Stealing these catalytic converters is no small task," said Cpl. Jamie Chung, noting each one weighs about 30 lb. "We think the suspects were at the lot for a considerable amount of time. We urge anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact us."

Chung said it's likely the brand-new converters, which retail for about $3,500 each, will be sold; converters from older vehicles tend to be sold for scrap metal. The thieves stole 17 converters, valued at a total of more than $60,000.

"There were cameras on the lot and we're in the process of going through the footage," he said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to see something."
