Thieves broke into four Tri-City schools over the weekend, targeting the vending machines in at least two of them.

Port Moody Police reported break-ins at Port Moody and Heritage Woods secondary schools. Const. Luke van Winkel said the administration offices were hit at PMSS, though it's not known yet if anything was stolen; at Heritage Woods, the vending machine cash was taken.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said the alarm appeared to have scared off a potential thief from Port Coquitlam's Maple Creek middle school early Friday morning but on Sunday at 3 a.m., Coquitlam's Dr. Charles Best secondary was broken into and vending machine money was stolen.

Police are reviewing video surveillance to determine if it was the same suspect.

School District 43 spokesperson Cheryl Quinton said although school break-ins are not uncommon, having three high schools hit in one weekend is "not the norm."
