Three people are in hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire ripped through a home in the Citadel Heights neighbourhood of Port Coquitlam Thursday night.

Thirteen people were displaced by the blaze, which engulfed one home and caused significant damage and air quality issues to two neighbouring structures.

Port Coquitlam fire chief Nick Delmonico estimated the damage to be in the hundreds of thousands and said the home where the fire broke out was uninhabitable.

"It's pretty much a write-off," he said. "It appears the fire started on the main floor. That is where the bulk of the damage is. It is fairly extensive."

Investigators still do not know what caused the blaze and were continuing to comb through the debris Friday morning.

Delmonico said the call came into the station at 11:38 p.m. and it took crews approximately two hours to contain and extinguish the flames.
