A Surrey man will spend three years in prison and has received a lifetime firearms ban after being convicted of a robbery at a Coquitlam home almost two years ago.

Cory Matthew Brian Jay was given three years and three months in jail after being convicted on two counts of robbery, one count of using an imitation firearm in the commission of a robbery and one count of having his faced masked while committing an indictable offence. He also received a conviction for breaching his bail conditions while awaiting trial.

The charges stem from a March 2009 incident at a Coquitlam home where Jay and a co-accused stole three iPhones and two wallets.

The pair went to the home on March 7 to watch a hockey game, according to Port Coquitlam provincial court Judge Shehni Dossa's reasons for sentence.

Court documents said the pair returned to the home the next night to find their host and a guest in the residence. Jay had an imitation weapon in his hand and had masked himself by pulling his hoodie over his face.

The reasons for sentence said Jay pointed his gun at the man, pushed him to the ground and kicked him several times in the head. He then asked the woman for her wallet, told her to lift up her shirt, and kicked her in the leg several times.

After the offence occurred, the 27-year-old Jay moved to Calgary to seek employment and help with a drug and alcohol problem.

The judge wrote that while the accused had been successful in rehabilitating his drug problem, a prior robbery conviction and the use of an imitation firearm were aggravating factors in deciding the sentence. Jay will also have to provide a DNA sample.
