Christmas trees are going up across Port Coquitlam ahead of the launch of PoCo Heritage Society's Holiday Tree Festival on Sunday.

More than 60 businesses and community groups have entered the contest, with displays in 14 locations across the city.

"The trees that have gone up already are looking fabulous," said Pippa VanVelzen, one of the event organizers. "People have really got into the spirit and have decorated the trees with the themes of their organization."

The trees are spread out across Port Coquitlam and VanVelzen said she hopes people will mark the locations on their maps when they do their Christmas light tours over the holidays.

For the businesses and community groups participating in the contest, VanVelzen said the Holiday Tree Festival is a chance to promote their organization.

"It encourages people to walk into a place they may never have walked into before," she said. "It is another festive thing to do."

Those who get a chance to see the trees will also be able to vote for their favourite at www.placeweave.com through Dec. 18. Voters are eligible for draw prizes, including an iPod.

The Holiday Tree Festival is kicking off on Monday with a tea at the Heritage Centre at Leigh Square between 1 and 2:30 p.m.
