The The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce has yet to take a stand on the upcoming proportional representation referendum while it investigates the impact on business.
But BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson will be in town Tuesday for a chamber luncheon to talk about his position on the issue, although he is expected to speak on other topics as well.
Wilkinson has stated his opposition to the vote, which he says at bcliberalcaucus.bc.ca is rushed and designed to obtain a yes vote on proportional representation.
Chamber CEO Michael Hind said the chamber is also looking at the possibility of inviting a speaker who is in favour of proportional representation.
The public is welcome to attend the luncheon and speech, although there is a $55 charge for non-members and a $40 charge for members. The luncheon takes place July 17 at the Executive Plaza Hotel, 405 North Rd., Coquitlam, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. To register, visit www.tricitieschamber.com.
This fall, voters will get to cast a vote in a mail-in ballot to determine whether provincial elections should switch from first-past-the-post to an electoral system of proportional representation. They will then be asked to rank three different proportional representation systems:
• mixed-member proportional;
• rural-urban proportional;
• dual-member proportional.
