CHECK MATE

Teens ages 14 and up and adults can pop in to the Poirier branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (575 Poirier St.) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to try their hand at chess. Chess sets will be provided.

OPENING RECEPTION

Meet the artists behind the three new displays opening at PoMoArts (formerly the Port Moody Arts Centre, 2425 St. Johns St.). The reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. to see the shows from the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (touring exhibit); Melanie Olson (Targeted); and Robert Ascroft and Sue A. Cowan (Wood, Water, Stone: The Coquitlam River). The exhibits are up until March 4. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL

Stage 43 Theatrical Society presents an updated adaptation of the 18th century comedy The School for Scandal with a modern version by William Harwell Wilson. The shows run at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way) from Jan. 11 to 20 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Jan. 14. Tickets are $63/$57.
