Firefighters will be safely shredding natural holiday trees across the Tri-Cities this weekend.

Here's what's on in the Tri-Cities for Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024: 


TREE CHIPS

Take your live Christmas tree — without tinsel or decorations — to the Port Coquitlam Firehall 1 (1725 Broadway St.) to be chipped. The event is by donation and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, the Port Moody firefighters will have their drive-thru Christmas Tree chip from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inlet Centre firehall (150 Newport Dr.). The cost is a minimum $5 donation; tree pick-up is available by emailing [email protected]. And, in Coquitlam, organizations will be chipping trees to raise funds at the following locations: Mundy Park (641 Hillcrest St.); Town Centre Park (Lot A, 1299 Pinetree Way); and Canadian Tire (parking lot, 1200 Seguin Dr.).

RECYCLE DAY

Port Moody residents looking to recycle their holiday waste can drop them off at the Port Moody Recreation Complex parking lot (next to the tennis courts, 300 Ioco Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual Centralized Recycling Day accepts paper gift wrap, boxes, Styrofoam, packaging, plastic film and overwrap (Styrofoam and plastic film must be bagged separately). Ribbons, bows, foil gift wrap and glass are not allowed.

REPAIR IT

Bring your broken household item or ripped clothing to the monthly Repair Cafe, happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Port Coquitlam Public Works Yard (1737 Broadway St.). The event is run by the City of Port Coquitlam with volunteers from the Rotary Centennial club.

LEGION NIGHT

Enjoy the tunes and jump on the dance floor at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 263 in Coquitlam (1025 Ridgeway Ave.) for a fun night with Flashback. The band hits the stage at 7 p.m.

GOAL!

Catch the Port Moody Panthers face off against the Chilliwack Jets on home ice for a 7:45 p.m. hockey game at the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.).

SALSA DANCE

Slip on your dance shoes and groove to the Latin beats with Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler of the Salsa Dance Zone. Its dance lesson for beginners at the Port Coquitlam Legion (2675 Shaughnessy St.) starts at 8 p.m. And, at 9 p.m., the dance floor opens for the dance party until midnight. Admission is $15. All ages are welcome.
