Recreation job fair

Learn about the recreational jobs available through the City of Coquitlam at its job fair, happening from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pinetree Community Centre (1260 Pinetree Way). City staff working in parks, recreation, culture and human resources will be on hand to provide information about current and upcoming positions.

KidSport Tri-Cities

Head over to Riverside Secondary in Port Coquitlam (2215 Reeve St.) and load up on gently used sporting goods for the family. The KidSport Tri-Cities' sale runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and admission is by donation or with a non-perishable item for the SHARE food bank. Cash, debit and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds from the biannual sale subsidize registration fees for kids from families who are struggling financially.

Festival du Bois

Head over to Mackin Park (1046 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) for an afternoon and evening of francophone and francophile fun. Under the Grand Chapiteau, starting at noon, is Podorythmie, followed by the official opening and a show by the Métis Jiggers, Missy D, Robin Layne and the Rhythm Makers, La Famille LeBlanc, Collage Trad and Visited Connexions. Musical sessions for kids are also under le Petit Chapiteau while musical workshops are across the street at Mackin House.

Camping 101

Meet Park Canada’s Learn-to-Camp team about what you need to bring for a front-country camping experience. The topics include camping basics, how to plan the trip, what to bring, cooking and wildlife safety. The talk is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Rooms 136 and 137 at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way).

Freya the Brave

Port Coquitlam's Terry Fox Library (2150 Wilson Ave.) will have Freya, a certified St. John Ambulance dapple dachshund therapy dog who brings happiness and comfort to those in need. The animal, who works at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and other places and now has its own storybook, will make an appearance from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The event is open to all ages.

Film fest

Take a seat in the Inlet Theatre at Port Moody City Hall (100 Newport Dr.) for the continuation of the Port Moody Film Society’s Canadian mini film festival this weekend. It starts tonight at 7 p.m. with And the Birds Rained Down, and at 9:15 p.m. with To Kill a Tiger.

Legion tunes

Dance to the music from RePlay at the Royal Canadian Legion in Coquitlam (1025 Ridgeway Ave.). The band will be on the stage from 7 to 10 p.m. to entertain.

Carney Shrek

Grab a seat in the Terry Fox Theatre (1260 Riverwood Gate, Port Coquitlam) to see the Shrek: The Musical by students at Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School. Nicolas Lam takes the lead role. The performance with a live orchestra starts at 7 p.m. and is family friendly. Tickets are $18.

Singers–songwriters

Guitar masters James Keelaghan and Jez Lowe team up for a concert at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way) at 7:30 p.m. The show is part of the facility’s TD Music Series. Tickets are $37/$34/$16.

Salsa night

Learn the basic dance steps to Salsa — and dance the night away — with instructors Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler of the Salsa Dance Zone. Tonight’s lesson starts at 8 p.m. at the Port Coquitlam legion (2675 Shaughnessy St.), with the dance floor opening at 9 p.m. Admission is $15 and the event is open to ages 19 and up.
