Tri-City News finalist in newspaper awards

The Tri-City News is a finalist for five awards in the 2019 BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards.

The Tri-City News is a finalist for five awards in a provincial newspaper competition.

The BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards are given out annually to honour some of the best work done by newspapers in the previous year.

The Tri-City News finalists for 2019 are:

• Reporter Diane Strandberg for the Black Press Media Editorial Award for her editorial, headlined "Time to open up, Coquitlam" on transparency and the city of Coquitlam's Strategic Investment Advisory Panel. The other finalists are Brent Richter of the North Shore News, a Glacier Media sister paper, and Greg Knill of the Chilliwack Progress.

• Reporter/photographer Mario Bartel, who is a finalist in two categories: Photo Essay, for his photographic feature on the Donkey Cross cyclecross race in Port Coquitlam (the other finalists are the Parksville/Qualicum Beach News and Crystal Schick of the Yukon News); and Portrait/Personality Photo, for his picture of athlete Amanda Smith and her daughter as the mom prepared for the Canwest Games (other finalists: Cindy Goodman of the North Shore News and Mark D. Brett of the Penticton Western News).

• Production manager Matt Blair and graphic designer Mike Kingston for the Ad Campaign Award for "NewPort Village: Where Santa Shops." The other finalists are Birgit Brunner and Courtney Harding of the North Shore News and Whitney Sobool of Whister's Pique Newsmagazine, both Glacier Media publications.

• Blair and publisher Shannon Mitchell for the Newspaper Promotion Award for "Every Heart Counts." The other finalists are: Karl Partington of Pique Newsmagazine, Whitney Sobool, also of Pique.

 

The BCYCNA Ma Murray Awards will be handed out at a banquet April 27 in Richmond.
