Students from across School District 43 will host a climate action Halloween event outside Coquitlam city hall Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Our hope is that Coquitlam city hall follow the actions of cities including Surrey, New Westminster, Port Moody and Vancouver in adopting the IPCC community climate targets,” wrote Jessica Liu, referring to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the international scientific body that synthesizes scientific research on climate change, its causes, future impacts and options to respond.
Liu is a student organizer with the Tri-City branch of the Force of Nature Society, and the IPCC targets Liu and her organization are calling for aim to reduce emissions by 45% below 2010 levels by 2030, 65% by 2040 and 100% by 2050.
The city’s current target is to reduce emissions by 15% below 2007 levels by 2031.
According to Liu, SD43 secondary green clubs have already committed to attend.
The event is open to the public and will welcome all ages with special emphasis on youth.
