Got guns?
In June, police departments throughout B.C. will be collecting unwanted and unauthorized guns during a firearms amnesty as a way of keeping them out of the hands of criminals.
But don't plan to head to the local police station with an armload of guns.
Anybody who wants to surrender ammunition and/or weapons, including imitations and replicas, is asked to contact their local police department and provide a basic description of the items. Officers can then visit the residence to pick up the firearms.
The amnesty program - which doesn't apply to guns used for a criminal purpose - follows similar events in 1997, 1998 and 2006 that took thousands of guns off B.C. streets. The most recent one saw just over 3,200 guns turned in, as well as 96,500 rounds of ammunition - plus a rocket launcher and a machine gun.
