Two injured in construction accident in Coquitlam

Rebar wall collapse sent two people to Royal Columbian Hospital

Two workers were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital Wednesday afternoon after a rebar wall collapsed at a construction site at the former Safeway property on Austin Avenue.

Coquitlam Fire Chief Jim Ogloff said by the time first responders arrived on scene workers had already freed the two men. Firefighters assisted in bringing the pair up to street level, where paramedics were able to transport them to hospital.

"They were able to pull the two workers out," he said, noting the property is under heavy construction. "It is just a giant excavation site."

Ogloff said the rebar wall was 10 by 14 feet in size and it appeared one of the victims suffered a pelvic injury. He added that WorkSafeBC representatives had been called in to investigate.
