Two Tri-City schools set to get seismic upgrades

Sir Frederick Banting middle school in Coquitlam and École des Pionniers de Maillardville in Port Coquitlam will get seismic upgrades but final costing still has to be done.

A spokesperson for the B.C. government said the projects, announced last week, are estimated at $10 million for Banting and $25 million for École de Pionniers, with construction not likely to start for a few years.s

The province is currently working with the respective school districts on a project assessment and final costing.

The schools are among 152 high-priority schools requiring seismic upgrades and paid for under the School Seismic Mitigation Program at an estimated total cost of $1.3 billion.

In a press release, SD43 board chair Melissa Hyndes and Conseil Scolaire Francophone board chair Alexandra Greenhill welcomed the news that the two seismic projects would go ahead.

Conseil Scolaire Francophone is the school district that serves 4,600 francophone students in B.C., including those at École de Pionniers.
