An area of Coquitlam that has long been a "dead zone" for a wireless company will soon have better reception.
And the deal with Rogers Communications will generate $26,000 a year for the city and its optical network corporation.
On Monday, council approved an agreement with Rogers for two "Nova" towers on the west side of Como Lake Avenue and Mariner Way. The antenna towers will stand on the north and south corners and will hold street lights; they will also be twice the circumference of a regular street light, according to a report.
The company will pay the city $7,000 annually for each pole plus $1,000 a month to QNet to lease the city's underground cables.
QNet GM Rick Adams said because the poles are under 15 m tall, public consultation isn't required.
The Rogers poles are the first to be negotiated under a new wireless protocol adopted by council in 2012 whose aim is to increase coverage as well as raise cash for the municipality.
Recently, Rogers announced its plans to place telecommunications equipment inside the new bell tower at St. Andrew's United Church in Port Moody.
