Be prepared.

A slogan often heard and one that the city of Coquitlam is wanting to echo so residents and businesses can be ready at a moment's notice should a local state of emergency be put in place.

On Aug. 6 — the Friday following the B.C, Day long weekend — experts from the city's emergency management staff are set to host a free webinar on how to assemble a proper emergency kit, what essentials should be included and why.

According to Coquitlam emergency program spokesperson Nicole Kimmitt, events that would constitute a local emergency include power outages, landslides and weather-related scenarios like severe heat, flooding, high winds and winter storms.

"As part of the City’s emergency preparations, households and businesses are encouraged to be prepared to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours after an emergency or disaster," she explained in a news release today (July 22).

"This enables responders to attend to critical emergencies and helps the community recover more quickly."

The session, entitled "What Goes in Your Emergency Kit?", is scheduled to take place Aug. 6 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Spots will be limited for the virtual event and residents are being asked to register in advance as the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions continue to put in-person seminars on hold.
