Two young men are facing charges for allegedly posing as members of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to solicit fraudulent door-to-door donations.
Approximately a dozen people in the Glenayre neighbourhood of Port Moody were asked for cash and checks and some did fall for the scam, according to Const. Luke van Winkel.
"If anyone did donate money or feel they may have been caught up in this, they should call us," he said. "We are still going through it all. We have a number of complainants that did give money."
Van Winkel said the pair were caught thanks in large part to social media.
After police received a call from the Alzheimer Society that two people unaffiliated with the organization had been seen soliciting donations, investigators tweeted out a warning to the public.
"Ten minutes after the tweet, we received a phone call from another complainant," he said. "They had just left their residence."
Police were able to quickly search the area and find the two suspects, who were known to investigators. Both are facing one count of false pretenses, said van Winkel.
