UPDATED: Celebration of Light 're-evaluating' its 25th anniversary plans

Pop up fireworks displays likely won't be coming to the Tri-Cities

Organizers with the Celebration of Light say they are "re-evaluating" plans to bring pop-up firework displays to the Tri-Cities and other Metro Vancouver municipalities.

On Wednesday, promoters with the group, which puts on annual fireworks extravaganza at English Bay in Vancouver, announced a schedule of 25 shows at cities across the region, including Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam. The pop-up displays were designed to celebrate the group's 25th anniversary.

But city staff contacted by The Tri-City News in Coquitlam and Port Moody said they had not confirmed anything with the Celebration of Light and details were not close to being finalized.

"I'm not sure where that information originated from," said Rosemary Lodge, the manager of civic affairs with the city of Port Moody. "There has been some initial discussion, but nothing has been confirmed."

Kathleen Vincent, Coquitlam's manager of corporate communications, said the same thing in an email.

Randy Clegg, a media relations person with the Celebration of Light, offered a brief response to several queries from The Tri-City News on Thursday.

"We are currently re-evaluating the 25th countdown and more information will be available on our website soon," he said in an email.

Heather Sharpe, a producer with Brand Live Management, which is promoting the event, did not return several calls before The Tri-City News' deadline.

On June 17, a schedule appeared on the Celebration of Light website listing 25 pop-up displays July 1 to 25 at municipalities across the region to celebrate the event's 25th anniversary. The dates included July 8, 17 and 24 in Coquitlam, July 10 and 18 in Port Moody, and a yet to be confirmed date

in Port Coquitlam tentatively set for July 22. But 24 hours later, the schedule had been removed from the website.
