The number of fatalities at the hands of suspected double murderer Angus Mitchell could have been much higher, with a handful of Tri-City targets on the Burnaby man's hit list.
On Wednesday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) revealed Mitchell had plans to target six specific individuals and six businesses.
On the list were two Tri-City people, one each from Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, as well as a landscaping business in Coquitlam.
Police are not releasing the names of the individuals and businesses on Mitchell's list.
"Mitchell appears to have spent time gathering information about his intended victims and planning his entry and escape routes from each location," said IHIT Insp. Kevin Hackett.
"We cannot put a number to the potential fatalities that could have come from Mr. Mitchell's premeditated plan as many of the businesses were highly populated," Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in an IHIT release.
"The 'list' is not a typical list with numbered names within," Pound added. "It is more of an individual work-up for each individual and each business, with home addresses, maps of individuals' homes and escape routes.
"We know his plans were methodically thought out and prepared for each target."
The list also includes a Burnaby school as well as individuals and businesses in Vancouver, New Westminster, Surrey and White Rock.
Police are crediting Maple Ridge resident Susanne Murphy with preventing Mitchell from reaching his targets.
Moments after hearing a police alert with a description of Mitchell's vehicle, Murphy was heading out to walk her dog along a dirt road when she drove past his distinctive green van.
"And as I drove past it, I saw the licence plate and realized this is the guy," and she immediately called 911, Murphy said at an IHIT press conference Wednesday in Surrey.
Mitchell was killed after opening fire on police May 30 in Maple Ridge; they had been hunting him after he allegedly killed two people inside a Burnaby sushi restaurant on May 27, then allegedly shot and injured his former landlord in Burnaby on May 29.
Mitchell's former landlord and the woman killed in the Sushi restaurant, Chinh Diem Huynh, were the first targets on his list. The owner of the sushi restaurant, Andy Tran, who was also killed, was not on Mitchell's list, police say.
