A massive condo fire in Coquitlam had fire crews and police evacuating the area Tuesday afternoon as billowing smoke choked residents out of neighbouring homes.

The fire at 99 Begin St. brought BC Ambulance paramedics and several hose and ladder trucks from Coquitlam Fire to the scene, causing police to reroute traffic around Brunette Avenue late Tuesday afternoon.

The 99 Begin St. condo block appeared to be under construction at the time of the fire as the face of the building was covered in scaffolding.

Smoke continued to pour out of the severely damaged roof and crews remained on-scene into the evening Tuesday.

In the meantime, residents are being evacuated to Dogwood Pavilion. Information for evacuees is available at:http://www.coquitlam.ca/Begin+Fire.htm.
