Coquitlam RCMP searched a wooded area near Cedar Drive after residents reported gunshots only to find some firecrackers had been set off, creating the sound of gunfire.

Coquitlam RCMP spent the early morning hours Thursday searching a large wooded area on the Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam border after residents reported hearing gun shots earlier this morning.

The noise turned out to be fireworks that had been detonated in the Raymond Avenue area near Cedar Drive in the early morning hours.

"It was a thoughtless act that took up a lot of resources," said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Michael McLaughlin

Police have since wrapped up the investigation without finding any evidence of criminality. They had been on scene in the area bounded by Victoria Drive, Prairie Avenue, Cedar Drive and Coast Meridian since 4:30 a.m. according to spokesman Michael McLaughlin.

One private school closed and two public schools were in a hold and secure situation while dogwalkers and runners who use the trails in the area were turned back, McLaughlin said.

BC Christian Academy was closed and class was in session at Leigh elementary and Minnekhada middle schools but students were not allowed to leave the building until the situation was resolved.
