A 43-year-old man and his dog are still missing on Eagle Mountain in Coquitlam.

Coquitlam Search and Rescue manager Michael Coyle said the hiker had set off at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, likely heading north up the Halvor Lunden trail to the Swan Falls trail, a trek that should take about six hours.

The man called police at about 6:45 p.m., who then contacted Coquitlam SAR.

"He gave us an area to look at but unfortunately we weren't able to spot him from the air, and we weren't able to use our location software because it wasn't giving us a good enough fix on him - it was giving me data too far out," Coyle said.

Rescuers used the information they had to drop a team of five SAR members into the area, and sent another team of five from the ground.

Despite searching throughout the night, rescuers were unable to locate the missing hiker and the helicopter was sent back up in the air at sunrise on Tuesday morning. Another nine SAR members were also heading out to continue the search.

Coyle said the hiker is in an area of Eagle Ridge known as Tangled Summit, and all they know is that the man last saw a sign marked "TT Top" before he left the trail. He's now believed to be somewhere between the Halvor Lunden and Swan Falls trails.

"We have no real idea how prepared he is," Coyle said, noting rescuers searched the man's car but found nothing to indicate what he might or might not have with him. The warm overnight weather is a big help but Coyle said there are still plenty of snow patches at the top of the ridge.
