UPDATED: One person dead after Lougheed Highway vehicle accident

One person is dead and several others are injured after a serous crash Tuesday afternoon closed Lougheed Highway at Pitt River Road in Coquitlam.

One person is dead and several others are injured after a serous crash Tuesday afternoon closed Lougheed Highway at Pitt River Road in Coquitlam.

Firefighters were on scene conducting an auto extraction and Fire Chief Tony Delmonico said the accident was extremely serious.

"The road is closed, the highway is closed and they are trying to get the occupant out," he said.

The accident occurred shortly after noon and Coquitlam RCMP said the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is investigating.

The crash occurred between two vehicles but details of what exactly happened were not available by The Tri-City News' print deadline. Police said the road closure was expected to last for several hours.

"We don't have any other information to release at these early stages of the investigation," said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung in a press release. "We urge witnesses who have not spoken to an officer to contact us."
