An elderly Port Coquitlam man who was hit while walking in a crosswalk with a nine-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon succumbed to his injuries overnight.

The two were walking on Citadel Drive at Gateway Place, across from Citadel middle school, in foggy conditions shortly after 3 p.m. when they were hit by a vehicle and suffered serious injuries. The boy was treated for non-life threatening injuries but the 76-year-old victim died in hospital.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung confirmed that the two were related.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and co-operated with police. Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services investigators have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors but say it's too early to speculate about what other factors contributed to the incident.

The name of the man is not being released at the family's request.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision with help from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and are asking any witnesses who haven't yet spoken to an officer to contact them at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2014-661.
