UPDATED: Vehicle rollover on Riverside Drive in Port Coquitlam

Fire crews needed the jaws of life to extricate a man from a vehicle after it collided with a truck and rolled over on Riverside Drive in Port Coquitlam Friday morning.

Fire crews needed the jaws of life to extricate a man from a vehicle after it collided with a truck and rolled over on Riverside Drive in Port Coquitlam Friday morning.

The truck launched over the curb and came to rest on the front steps of a nearby house, while the car flipped over on the sidewalk and front lawn of the same property.

"It was pretty heavy impact for a residential neighbourhood," said PoCo deputy fire chief Terry Hochstetter. "We had to cut through the window and take the door off to get the person out."

The driver of the truck suffered a leg injury while the motorist in the smaller vehicle was taken to hospital, but was conscious during the extraction. Paramedics and fire crews took spinal precautions when moving the patient.

A ten-year-old passenger in the truck was shaken, but not seriously hurt.

Young people were making their way to the nearby Terry Fox secondary at the time of the collision and Hochstetter said they were lucky no one else was hurt.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said. "It was really just wet roads and there was a lot of kids in the neighbourhood."
