Use caution on trails, cities and RCMP warn

The following media release was issued on Friday at 5:52 p.m.:

"The cities of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam are urging residents and visitors to exercise some caution over the long weekend in parks and on trails and report any suspicious activity to the Coquitlam RCMP following two recent unrelated attacks.

The investigations relate to an assault near a trail at Chine Drive and Burleigh Avenue in Port Coquitlam in the early hours of April 23, 2013, and the discovery of a body on the trails in Colony Farm in Coquitlam the afternoon of May 12, 2013. The Port Coquitlam incident is being investigated by the Coquitlam RCMP Major Crimes Unit. The Coquitlam incident is being investigated by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the two files are related and both appear to be random attacks. Both investigations remain active and the Coquitlam RCMP is planning enhanced patrols of local parks and trails over the long weekend.

In the interest of public safety and to support the ongoing police investigations, local residents and anyone planning to visit the area over the long weekend are asked to do the following:
