An 18-year-old Port Moody man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting his father and barricading himself in a Coronation Park home for several hours Saturday night.

Police arrived on scene at around 6:30 p.m. after determining the man was armed with a knife and refused to come outside. A K9 unit and the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team were called in for support and a flash-bang grenade was heard going off in the vicinity of the home.

"We need you to come out," an officer said over a loudspeaker. "We are really concerned for you. There's a lot of people here. We need to make sure you're safe. We don't want to be doing any damage to the house or getting anybody hurt."

The man was instructed to either pick up his phone or come to the front door without anything in his hands.

After approximately three hours, the Port Moody Police Department said the suspect responded to police directions "and was taken into custody." The department added that neither the father or suspect were injured in the incident.
