Volunteers needed for Port Coquitlam bike park rebuild

Cycling enthusiasts in Port Coquitlam are being asked to pitch-in and help the city rebuild its bike skills park on Shaughnessy Street next week.

Cycling enthusiasts in Port Coquitlam are being asked to pitch-in and help the city rebuild its bike skills park on Shaughnessy Street next week.

The park was closed on July 30 in order to allow work crews to screen the soil and eliminate an increasing number of rocks and debris that were coming out of the ground.

A large pile of dirt has been left behind and now volunteers are needed to help rebuild some of the jumps and other technical features.

Community work days will be held between August 20 and 22 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. All volunteers will be entered into a draw to win one of five $20 parks and recreation gift cards.

Participants are asked to bring a flat shovel or rake, work gloves, close toed shoes and should be dressed for the weather. The city said it will provide refreshments, sunscreen, wheel barrows and barbecue hot dogs for lunch.

All ages are welcome to help but children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

The park was first built in 2007, when more than 60 volunteers came out for two days to shape the facility's original jumps and technical features.

Today, cyclists of all abilities are able to practice on the park's obstacles, including everything from a beginner log ride and ramped log crossing to more intermediate skinnies, teeter totters, ramps and dirt jumps.
