Warm weather a treat in Port Moody

Fish and chips and ice cream shops see a booming business as record warm temperatures replace the cold weather chill of the past few weeks

All it takes is a few days of warm weather to get people to the seaside.

And Monday was no exception as crowds headed to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody for a stroll.

The deluge of sun seekers created extra business for the local ice cream and fish and chip shops at the popular PoMo park.

“People when they come in they’re a lot more cheerful, they’ve got a smile on their face,” said Scott Purcha, who was working the counter inside Rocky Point Ice Cream.

Outside, the Bradbeer family was enjoying some locally-made ice cream treats.

“This is pretty sweet, it’s a great day,” said Jordan Bradbeer.

Temperatures are expected to climb as high as 20C in the Tri-Cities and further inland, according to the latest Environment Canada forecast, with the sun to shine brightly through to Thursday, when there will be a mix of sun and cloud.

By the weekend, a few rain showers are expected to cool temperatures down a few degrees.

But for now, it’s t-shirt weather, with visitors flocking to local parks and children heading to sports camps for spring break.

Lois Graham, manager of Pajo’s Fish and Chips, said customers were drawn to Rocky Point Park over the weekend as record-breaking warm temperatures replaced cooler temperatures the previous weekend.

The warm weather boosts the morale of staff, said Graham, who said the stand was quiet when the record cold weather put the Tri-Cities into a deep freeze for several weeks.

“When it was cold, we plowed through it, we had to persevere.”
