With the mercury dipping and electric space heaters in use — at home and work — Port Coquitlam firefighters are warning about potential fire hazards.

Last week, the department issued a number of tips to keep residents safe; among them:

• Buy a portable heater with a CSA or ULC approved seal.

• Keep heaters at least three feet away from flammables i.e., drapes, clothes and papers.

• And unplug the heater when you leave the room or go to bed.

As for festive decorating, Christmas trees need to be at least a metre away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.

And while cooking, make sure someone is always at the stove or fryer, and watch for kids nearby.
