Most gas stations in the Tri-Cities are now offering fuel at $2 per litre or more.

Gas prices have soared above $2 per litre this week in the Tri-Cities.

However, as of this publication (Sept. 22), there appears to be one Port Coquitlam station that's still below the wallet-pinching threshold.

GasBuddy.com says the Shell stop at 1190 Pitt River Rd. is currently offering 193.9 cents a litre, which is also the second cheapest price for fuel available in all of Metro Vancouver.

That's roughly eight cents more than the cheapest from last Friday (Sept. 22), which was 185.9 at Costco in Port Coquitlam (2370 Ottawa St.).

Everywhere else is either at or above $2 a litre across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, which is an increase of more than a seven per cent compared to last week and remains one of the highest prices for gas in Canada.

In Toronto, the price per litre was forecast to remain steady at 148.9 cents, and in Montreal at 164.9 cents.

In Alberta, Calgary and Edmonton’s price per litre of gas to remain static at 136.9 and 127.9 cents, respectively.

Global fuel prices spiked across the world following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February, adding to record inflation rates not seen in decades.

Experts say inflation has been compounded by a number of extreme weather events around the world as well as continued supply chain disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest fuel price forecast comes as Statistics Canada released its latest data on the country’s annual inflation rate, which sunk to 7.0 per cent in August largely on the back of falling fuel prices.

Food prices, however, continued to grow in August at the fastest rate since 1981, up 10.8 per cent over the past year.

Meanwhile, B.C.'s least expensive price for gas is in Mara at 161.9 cents per litre.

The highest price for fuel in the Tri-Cities is currently 209.5 cents a litre at Coquitlam's Real Canadian Superstore (3000 Lougheed Hwy.).
