WiFi in parks in Coquitlam?

Wireless internet could soon be more accessible in Coquitlam as the city looks at expanding its WiFi network to public parks and outdoor venues.

Currently, wireless internet is available at all indoor facilities and at Spirit Square, which is across the street from city hall. But on Monday, the city's information and communication technology manager, Rick Adams, told council that staff will look at expanding the network in 2015, likely starting with Town Centre Park.

"We want to have WiFi there for our 125th [birthday] celebrations and the [BC] Seniors Games," he told council.

In certain instances, the city's wireless infrastructure will be able to piggyback onto the Shaw WiFi system that the company is already initiating. Adams said that for an incremental cost, the city could get its wireless services deployed at the same time.

He also noted that the amount of money it takes to put wireless internet into parks is relatively small.

"It costs us several hundred dollars for the access point," he said. "If there is cabling required, it would cost us some money."
