Women want a chance to Glow at Coquitlam event

Women are known for taking self-improvement seriously. They blog and attend seminars, network and take part in trade shows.

But seriously, when do they ever have fun?

One group of Tri-City women thinks gals should have it all and are organizing an evening event June 1 called Glow.

Glow: A Women's Evening of Change and Celebration at the Executive Inn in Coquitlam promises to be an inspirational night out that creator Mandi Sellers hopes will inspire women to take action to achieve their dreams.

"We want women to have a very fun and glamourous experience," said Sellers, a Coquitlam mom whose day job is working as an adult educator for Com-Tech Learning Solutions Inc.

For the past several months, Sellers has been working with a group of friends and acquaintances on Glow after inviting participants to create an event that would encourage women to achieve their potential

A week after she sent out an email, a dozen dynamic women were sitting around her glossy dining room table like Arthurian nights planning a battle. Everyone took on a job and Glow was born with the details hammered out down to the decor and drinks (martinis, red carpet entrance, photos taken with Coquitlam firefighters, etc.) in just a few months.

"I was humbled and surprised," Sellers said about the energy and enthusiasm of her group.

Margaret Jetelina, a writer and editor, was one of the women who answered the call to action. She said she, too, wanted to be part of an event that seeks to inspire women while at the same time providing a fun time and giving back to the community. Proceeds are going to the BC Cancer Foundation and Tri-City Transitions, which provides programs for women and families.

Emcee will be Joti Samra, Oprah Winfrey Network TV host and the Bachelor Canada psychologist, and speakers will include Ted Kuntz, notable author of Peace Begins with Me, Kim Amani, life and intimacy coach, and Ali Zentner, a doctor who once weighed more than 320 lb. and now counsels people, writes a blog and makes television appearances on health and nutrition.

The inaugural evening will also feature a dance party, a martini bar, a trade show, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres and a complimentary swag bag at the end of the evening.

If the event is a success, Glow will return next year and women will be encouraged to form "accountability" groups to help each other achieve their goals.

Said Sellers: "I want women to know that dreams really do come true."
