Worker gave a hoot about baby barn owls found in Coquitlam

Three baby barn owls lost their home with the dismantling of the old Port Mann Bridge.

But they are now recovering thanks to the intervention of an alert construction worker and the Wildlife Rescue Association.

The owl's nest was not spotted until after the section was relocated to a site in Coquitlam and when the parents did not return after a day, the two- to seven-week-old birds were transferred to the WRA's Burnaby rescue centre.

When they arrived Tuesday evening, the owlets were in poor shape - emaciated, dehydrated and hypothermic after a day without food and water. The youngest of the three was on its back and barely conscious while its siblings had trouble standing.

They were given fluids and placed in an incubator, then later hand-fed, which caused them to perk up. After spending the night recuperating form their ordeal, they were transferred to the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta, which has special facilities for rearing young owls.
