Wormy workshops? Free trees? Earth Week in the Tri-Cities is around the corner

There are lots of events in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody next week to celebrate Earth Week 2024.

You can learn how to be good to Mother Earth through a series of Tri-City events during Earth Week, April 21 to 28.

Sunday, April 21

  • Port Moody residents can pick up a free tree (one per household) at the farmers market in the parking lot in the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.) while supplies last. The market is on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of residency is required.
  • The Wondrous Tree Fellowship marks its eighth annual Earth Day Tree Walk with a spin around Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody). There will be live entertainment for families from 12:45 to 1:15 p,.m. while the guided tree way is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. to help attendees identify native tree and plant species. Meet on the northern side of the park by the playground. The event is free and happens rain or shine.

Monday, April 22

  • On Earth Day, catch a documentary or two that sheds light on environmental issues and advocacy. Biggest Little Farm rolls at the Glen Pine Pavilion (1200 Glen Pine Crt., Coquitlam) at 11 a.m. while Addicted to Plastic is being screened at 1 p.m. at Dogwood Pavilion (1655 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam).
  • Starting today, the City of Coquitlam will host Earth Week seed pops workshops until April 27. Seed pops bundle individual seeds with natural additives and biodegradable materials — easy to play and grow in home gardens. The workshops are at Town Centre Park on:
    • April 22 at 5 p.m.
    • April 23 at 3 p.m.
    • April 24 at 10 a.m.
    • April 25 at 3 p.m.
    • April 26 at 5 p.m.
    • April 27 at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, April 23

  • Port Moody residents can pick up a free tree (one per household) at Port Moody City Hall (100 Newport Dr.) while supplies last. Proof of residency is required. The event is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesday, April 24

  • Port Moody residents can learn about the city’s tree protection bylaw at an in-person presentation at city hall (100 Newport Dr.) at 5:30 p.m. Review the information boards, ask questions of city staff and share your thoughts. 

Thursday, April 25

  • Create an indoor planter for the spring. Gardeners of all ages and skill levels are welcome; supplies will be included. The event at the Inspiration Garden in Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) starts at 2 p.m. and costs $40.

Saturday, April 27

  • Join the City of Port Moody’s nature challenge, which begins today with an education walk along the Shoreline Trail at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street) at 8 a.m. The second challenge is from 9 to 11 a.m. to explore the fish at Noons Creek (340 Ioco Rd.) while the third challenge is the Heron Walk, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting from the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.). Register via portmoody.ca/signmeup and select “Educational Programs” under “Dept. of Environment and Parks.”
  • Don’t dump your ripped goods in the landfill: Take your broken household items to be fixed up by volunteers at the Repair Café, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dogwood Pavilion (1655 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam).
  • See the environmental education booths and talk to experts at Lions Park (2300 Lions Way) at a family-friendly gathering hosted by the City of Port Coquitlam. Running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, the event coincides with the city-wide garage sale, which begins at 9 a.m. at participating households. The first 50 PoCo residents on site can receive a free tree to play in their residential yards (attendees must show proof of residence to be eligible). As well, city staff will be on hand to sell 200-litre rain water barrels and food trucks will also be on site. 

Sunday, April 28

  • Two more City Nature Challenge events are happening today in the City of Port Moody: At 10 a.m., learn about bears and how to co-exist with wildlife at a session at Bert Flinn Park (entrance at Heritage Mountain Boulevard at David Avenue); and at 1:30 p.m., find out about the fish at Mossom Creek hatchery (Mossom Creek Drive off Ioco Road). Register via portmoody.ca/signmeup and select “Educational Programs” under “Dept. of Environment and Parks.”
