A man in his 20s is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed several times early Sunday morning.

The man was walking through the area of Austin Avenue, near Blue Mountain Street, between 2 and 4 a.m. when a suspect emerged from the darkness and demanded valuables from the victim.

He fought back and ran to a nearby 7-11 store, where he realized he'd been stabbed several times during the scuffle.

Fortunately, the stab wounds were superficial and no vital organs were damaged.

Coquitlam RCMP are looking for a suspect described as a Caucasian man in his 40s with a dark complexion and a long scruffy grey beard. He was wearing a baseball hat with stains on it and appeared to be homeless.

Cpl. Jamie Chung said the incident does not appear to be related to the rash of recent business robberies in the area.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call police at 604-945-1580 and quote file number 2012-22933, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police are also asking for the public's help on a possible hit-and-run case.

The man who called Coquitlam RCMP on Aug. 17 said he believed he may have been hit by a vehicle on Aug. 10. He could only remember someone helping him into a cab near North Road and Smith Avenue, and later waking up in his Maillardville home with injuries similar to being struck by a vehicle.

When he went to the hospital for a check-up several days later, it was discovered he had suffered a concussion, broken ribs and numerous bruises and road rash.

"This is an unusual complaint and we would like public assistance to solve it," said Cpl. Jamie Chung. "If you saw anything similar to a hit and run around Aug. 10, we would like to hear from you."
