Sometimes, a 0-0 game can feel like a victory.
That was the case on Saturday when the Port Moody Mercury, fresh off a three-game losing skid, held off the high-flying Ladner Strikers in under-17 division two boys soccer.
Keeper Riley Engleson had an outstanding game in goal, picking off several Ladner crosses with precision, while Quinn Henney had some good free kicks in the offensive zone.
The Mercs came close to sealing the victory in the dying seconds of the game when Thomas Staddon managed to get a shot off but put it just wide of the net.
Also shoring up the defence was Christian Knowles and Tihomer Genev, who with the support of Bebo El Hosary did some excellent work holding the midfield.
REBELS
The Coquitlam Rebels won its fifth game of the season last weekend, sinking the Port Moody Destroyers 3-0 in under-13 Metro Girls Select division soccer.
In the first half, Maiya Callister set up Erin Ilett with a long ball into the clear, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net to open the scoring. Ilett scored again in the second half when she struck a left footed ball hall into the bark of the net from the top right of the box.
Michela Cervellin rounded out the scoring, netting the team's third of the game when she was set up by Sarah Hilford later on in the second half.
The Rebels back four of Madison Ciulla, Keely Lind-Petersen, Laura Marshall and Jenna Mariotti allowed very few chances on net and helped keeper Milena Wilson secure her fifth clean sheet of the season. The team now improves to 5-1-1 on the win.
The team will take on the West Vancouver Rangers at Cunnings Field at Coquitlam Town Centre.
GUNNERS
The Port Moody Gunners shutdown the Coast Ford FC 5-0 during a Premier Division men's soccer game last weekend.
Port Moody dominated the match from start to finished, with Jeff Rogers opening the scoring on a feed from Edi Bogere with a blast 16 yards out at the 30 minute mark of the game.
Bogere then made it 2-0 one minute later when he calmly split the defence to beat the keeper on the right side. Dave Robson also factored in the scoring before Bogere and Rogers both added their second goals of the game to round out the scoring.
The under-21 Port Moody Gunners also saw some success last weekend.
The club defeated Stolo 9-0 in a game that saw Jacob Kortenbach, Brendan Vollman, Steven Porcellato and Souta Nakayama each score twice, while Edi Bogere added a single. Sebastian Faber earned his second shutout of the day after backstopping the Premier squad earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, in division three soccer, the Gunners defeated the PoCo Rockets 1-0 in an open even match. Only a second-half goal was the difference in the match.
FOURTH TIE FOR COQ TNT SOCCER
The Coquitlam TNT isn't losing, but they aren't winning either.
Last weekend the club played Surrey United SC to a 0-0 final, the fourth tie of the season for the under-16 girls soccer club.
The team had numerous shots on goal but were unable to put the ball past the opposing net minder, an issue Surrey was also grappling with for the duration of the game.
Natasha Calis had several opportunities but couldn't capitalize, while Cristina Danieli and Risako Kazemi had strong games on offence.
In the midfield, Kaisha Markiewicz was strong, creating several chance in front of the net.
Isabel Antunes and Nicole Churisnoff were solid on defence, helping the TNT net minder post the shutout.
