It has been 19 years since the Terry Fox Ravens won the Legal Beagle high school basketball tournament, an invitational event the school hosts annually.

But on Saturday, the Port Coquitlam team snapped the losing streak with a 79-71 victory over Jermaine Haley and his Burnaby South Rebels in the championship game.

Haley has been touted as one of the best players in the province and scored 27 points in Saturday's match.

However, despite falling behind at the half, the Ravens were able to rally in the final quarter to take down the top-seed team and win the Legal Beagle crown.

Fox had a strong showing throughout the tournament.

The school defeated fellow Tri-City club the Heritage Woods Kodiaks in the opening game of the tournament before downing Harry Ainllay secondary 72-69 in the next match.

The only trouble the Ravens had during the round-robin portion was against Walnut Grove, who defeated the PoCo team 83-78. But Fox quickly got back to its winning ways with a 77-58 victory over Vancouver College followed by a 92-83 win over Burnaby South on Friday night.

When the dust settled after the round-robin portion of the tournament, the Ravens were in the final four.

The Tamanawis Wildcats of Surrey, a No. 10-ranked team, were defeated in the first playoff game for the Ravens, who jumped out to an early lead and did not look back. When the final buzzer sounded the Surrey club lost to Terry Fox 85-75.

That set the stage for a semifinal game against Kelowna, which the Ravens easily won 85-55, before the championship game against South Burnaby.

The Legal Beagle is an annual exhibition tournament that marks the start of the AAAA high school basketball season.

Terry Fox will begin regular season play this week.
