A Coquitlam soccer player that averaged a goal a game with SFU in the NCAA this season has been named athlete of the year at the university's annual award ceremony.

Jovan Blagojevic led his conference with seven game winners and was named second team All-American in the Great Northern Athletic Conference.

Other SFU Clan nominees vying for the award included football player Jordan Herdman, cross-country running athlete Oliver Jorgensen, basketball player Sango Niang and swimmer Adrian VanderHelm.

As a senior, Blagojevic was also eligible for the Lorne Davies Senior Award for graduating students who excel in the classroom and in the community. The award is named after a former SFU athletic director, who recently passed away.

The season caps a successful career for the Coquitlam athlete.

In 2011, he finished fourth in GNAC in shots per game, points per game and assists per game and was a conference champion.

In 2012, he had six goals and four assists despite missing 12 games due to injury. The performance earned Blagojevic a GNAC honourable mention all-star award.
