Anthony DiNicolo of the Simon Fraser Clan has been named co-Great Northwest Athletic Conference (NCAA Div. 2) player of the week, it was announced Monday.

An Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School grad, the defender DiNicolo was a standout while helping the Clan to two shutout victories last week -- 1-0 Saturday over Arizona's Grand Canyon University and 6-0 Wednesday over the Trinity Lutheran Eagles of Everett, Wash.

"Anthony was fantastic for us at the back this past week," said SFU head coach Alan Koch. "He helped settle our back four for the final 30 minutes against Grand Canyon and helped preserve a big victory.

"He has grown into a silent leader and has started off his senior year full of confidence," Koch added.

DiNicolo shared player-of-the-week honours with Garion Holian of Montana State Billings.

FRAZAO FINISHES

Janine Frazao's strike didn't come on the best chance of the game but it was enough as the No. 5-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer squad blanked the visiting Regina Cougars 1-0 in their home opener Friday at Point Grey's Thunderbird Park.

The T-birds Rachael Sawer sent a cross deep in the Regina zone, which was misplayed by Cougars 'keeper Stephanie Possberg. The ball squirted free onto the foot of Port Moody's Frazao, who calmly deposited the gaffe into the goal.

The win improved UBC to 2-0-0 on the Canada West university season, while the Cougs slipped to 0-2-1.

UBC continued to apply pressure but couldn't up their lead. The T-birds' best chance came in the 78th minute when some terrific footwork by Frazao set up both Sawer and Taryn Lim, but both shots failed to find the mark.
