The Archbishop Carney Stars limped into the playoffs during last weekend's B.C. AA High School Soccer Championships but they were able to post wins when it counted.

The Port Coquitlam club notched just one win and two ties during round-robin play, defeating defending champions the Seycove Seahawks of North Vancouver 5-1, before drawing 1-1 against the Sahali secondary Sabres of Kamloops and 2-2 against Isfeld secondary of Courtenay.

But a 1-0 win against the Nanaimo secondary Islanders meant a trip to the finals and a showdown against the Burnsview Griffins, a club that went 3-0 in pool play and won the tournament in 2010 and 2011.

Carney did not let their underdog status deter them in championship game.

The team jumped out to a lead and managed to keep the bruising Burnsview players hemmed in their own end for much of the game.

When the clock ran down, the Stars held a 2-1 lead to win the tournament's championship banner.

Carney's Pam Scowby was named tournament MVP.

In the bronze medal game, Nanaimo defeated the L.V. Rogers Bombers of Nelson 4-0.

Shelby Jeeves of Mark Isfeld secondary earned the Golden Boot Award for most goals scored. She tallied seven goals in the tournament andshared the honour with Emma Entzminger of Lambrick Park secondary.

The hosting Mark Isfeld secondary Ice placed sixth after losing to the Lambrick Park Lions of Victoria in the game for fifth place.
