Cara Lukawesky of Coquitlam pitched a complete-game shutout to spark the Simon Fraser Clan to a 2-0 triumph and a doubleheader sweep Monday of the St. Martin's Saints in university women's softball action in Lacey, Wash.

Victoria's Kelsie Hawkins matched Lukawesky's effort by throwing blanks as the Clan beat the Saints 1-0 in the second contest. Lukawesky improved to 14-5 on the season as SFU moved ahead of the Saints and into second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (NCAA Div. 2) with a 17-9 record, while the Saints slipped to 14-9.

The Clan currently sits 24-10 overall this season.

"It was a pitchers' duel today," said Clan head coach Mike Renney. "It was a battle for second place and both teams squandered some opportunities. The games were close but we got a couple of great performances from our pitchers."

On Saturday, Lukawesky may have been on the tough end of a 10-1 loss but her Clan teammates were less than perfect behind her.

Lukawesky surrendered six runs but only three were earned as the Clan committed three errors in the lopsided defeat, which was followed by a tough 1-0 loss to wrap up their four-game series with the Western Oregon Wolves in Monmouth, Ore.

The Clan travel to face the Central Washington Wildcats in more GNAC action next weekend in Ellensburg, Wash.
