The Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team will try to get back on a winning focus in their last game before the Great Northwest Athletic Conference playoffs.
Already assured of a spot as the third seed in the post-season tournament that begins March 7 in Bellingham, Wa., the Clan will close out its regular-season schedule Saturday in Billings, Mont., against the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets.
SFU is coming off a 67-49 loss Tuesday in Bellingham to the Western Washington Vikings in which Clan coach Bruce Langford said his charges seemed to lack focus.
“Usually we have good energy and tonight we were flat,” Langford said. “Too many players had exams and I think it hurt our focus.”
Still, the Clan hit the floor with gusto, opening a 22-14 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes. Even at halftime, they still clung to a 32-30 advantage. But after the break, the Vikings outscored the visitors 19-7 in the third quarter and never looked back.
Port Coquitlam’s Ozioma Nwabuko scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Coquitlam’s Kendal Sands netted five points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
• The SFU men’s team will be going for its fourth win in a row, and an improved prospect of qualifying for their first ever berth in the GNAC playoff, when they host Concordia University at the West Gym in Burnaby tonight at 7 p.m.
SFU is currently in fifth place, with six teams qualifying for the post-season tournament in Bellingham.
The Clan won it’s third game in a row Tuesday, 76-73, over Western Washington. The game was a make-up for one that had been postposed Feb. 12 when both campuses were closed by a snowstorm.
SFU will close out its regular season schedule at home on Saturday against Western Oregon.
