The Simon Fraser University Clan women’s basketball team won its sixth straight game Thursday, 85-48 over the Alaska University at SFU’s West Gym in Burnaby.
Coquitlam’s Kendal Sands scored seven points and pulled down three rebounds and Port Coquitlam’s Ozioma Nwabuko chipped in five points and five rebounds. The Clan were led by Sophie Swant’s 17 point.
SFU led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter, but pulled away in the second period by outscoring the visitors from Alaska 20-3 to increase their lead at the half to 39-16.
The win was the Clan’s eighth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, against three losses. The team’s record is 12-6 overall.
SFU will host another visitor from the far northwest on Saturday when the University of Alaska Anchorage bring their 18-1 record into the West Gym. The Seawolves have won 11 games in a row and they are ranked 11th in the NCAA Div. II. Game time is 7 p.m.
Men lose in Seattle
The Clan men’s basketball team lost its eighth game against a GNAC rival, 92-76, to Seattle Pacific University in Seattle on Thursday. SFU has just three wins in conference play and they’re 9-10 overall.
Coquitlam’s Graham Miller, a Dr. Charles Best grad, pulled down two rebounds and blocked a shot in just six minutes of playing time for the Clan, who were led by Othniel Spence’s 26 points.
The Clan will take on 12th-ranked Saint Martin’s University on Saturday in Lacey, Wash.
