Coquitlam Cheetah gals race to new B.C. record

The Cheetahs' young foursome of Esinam Ayesu-Attah, Miranda Menzies, Picabo Reeves and Cheyanne Tunti established a new B.C. junior girls club standard of 4:00.67 after placing second to the Simon Fraser 'A' unit, Cheetahs coach Tara Self confirmed Wednesday with The Tri-City News.

SFU won the four-team race in 4:00.30.

Not to be out-done, the Cheetahs' 4x100 men's relay squad claimed top spot, winning in 43.70 seconds over runner-up Kajaks and the third-place Comox Cougars. Members of the Cheetahs' winning team were Nicholas Ayin, Nathan George, Tunji Taylor-Lewis and James Linde.

Meanwhile, the Cheetahs' Jarid Vaughan had a big day individually, winning the men's 100 and 200 sprint races in 10.55 and 21.65 respectively.

Ayin was third in the men's 100 in 11.10, with his Cheetahs' teammate Jean Koorsten sixth in the 17-athlete field in 11.73.

Another Cheetah notable was Liza Whitehead, who finished second in the women's 100 in 12.20, with Ayesu-Attah fourth among 23 competitors in 12.71.

Also, the Cheetahs' Shania Payne nabbed fourth in the 27-runner women's 200 event in 26.23, while Reeves placed fourth among nine sprinters in the women's 400, posting a time of 1:01.73.
