Coquitlam Edge advance in U16 Coastal Cup soccer action

Coquitlam Metro Ford U-16 Edge celebrated their 2-1 BC Coastal Cup playoff win over West Coast Fuzion under blue skies at Percy Perry Stadium last Sunday.

Coquitlam Metro Ford U-16 Edge celebrated their 2-1 BC Coastal Cup playoff win over West Coast Fuzion under blue skies at Percy Perry Stadium last Sunday.

The home team came out strong during the opening 20 minutes of the game, but couldn't break through the Fuzion defense early, said Edge coach Mitch Weimer. Coquitam's Liz Stewart and Justyna Pomalecki relentlessly tested the Fuzion keeper with their right side runs.

Meanwhile, the Edge's midfield players pushed the play hard into the Fuzion's end on great setups by Rose Mendes, Cassie Weimer and Caitlyn Ledger.

"Edge finally broke the defense down on a spectacular right side run by Stewart as she caught the defenders flat footed, then froze the keeper and finished with confidence - staking Edge to a 1-0 lead," recapped Weimer.

At the start of the second half, a missed assignment in the Edge's end resulted in a Fuzion goal. Edge quickly answered on a tricky ball from Niamh McDonnel to take the lead.

"Shutdown specialists Cassidy Cooper and Jenny Varley then stepped it up in front of keeper Angela Webster to preserve the Edge victory and the berth in the quarter finals of the Coastal Cup," said Weimer.

Edge will play Vancouver's Kensington-Little Mountain Cougars at 2 p.m. Sunday at Charles Best secondary field.

"They are a quality team who are well disciplined defensively and play a responsible but physical game," said Weimer. "This will be a tough battle for us. We played them earlier in the season to a scoreless draw."
