Coquitlam Express get ready for raucous home opener

The Coquitlam Express may be undefeated in their first two games of the B.C. Hockey League season, but for head coach Jon Calvano, there is still a lot to work on.

With so many new faces on this year's roster, he said getting the players comfortable with each other on the ice has been the biggest obstacle to overcome during this pre-season.

And it could be a few more games before Calvano figures out how all the different pieces fit together.

"I don't think you ever really know what you have," he said. "You are always looking to get an advantage."

The Express' home-opener is expected to be a rough and tumble affair, playing the aggressive Langley Rivermen tonight at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre.

The Rivermen have bulked up in the off-season, with most of their forwards at least 6'2" or taller, with even larger skaters manning the blueline.

But where Langley has size, Calvano is hoping his team's speed and skating will give them an advantage - and create a more exciting brand of hockey for the Express faithful.

"They obviously went for a bigger team," he said. "But we don't feel size is the be all factor."

Fans will see for themselves tonight (Friday, Sept. 14) at 7 p.m. at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre. For more information go to www.coquitlamexpress.ca.
