The Coquitlam Express kicked off December with a win Wednesday night, beating up on BCHL basement-dwellers the Surrey Eagles at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.
Express forward Corey Mackin continued his tear up the league-leader board, adding three more points to his total, which is the highest in the league.
Teammates Brett Supinski also had a strong game and was named first star for his two goal and one assist performance.
The 19-year-old forward opened the scoring five minutes into the game, when he picked up a pass from Brendan Lamont and buried it past Eagles net minder Daniel Davidson.
Surrey managed to knot the game at one goal each six minutes later, however Mackin restored the lead for Coquitlam with a shorthanded goal later in the first assisted by Lamont. During the same power play, the Eagles were able to even the score again with a marker from Joseph Drapiuk, who was named second star of the game.
Surrey briefly held the lead in the second when Drapiuk scored a power play goal but Supinski responded with his second of the night, assisted by Corey Mackin.
Jackson Cressey gave Coquitlam the lead with 20 seconds left before the second intermission, before Michael Merulla added an insurance marker in the third period.
While Mackin has received a lot of attention for being the top-scorer in the lead, Supinski has quietly climbed up the rankings as well.
After Wednesday's three-point performance he is now third in the lead with 41 points, behind Liam Blackburn of West Kelowna.
However, the team still has a long way to climb if it hopes to move up the BCHL standings.
The club currently sits with 27 points on the season, good enough for fourth in the Mainland Division, four points back from the Langley Rivermen.
Coquitlam will look to improve
n its position this Sunday, when the team hosts the Interior Division's Merritt Centennials at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. For more information, go to www.coquitlamexpress.ca.
