Coquitlam Express start season right

It may be too early in the hockey season to be boasting about a lossless record but the Coquitlam Express' 2012-13 campaign got off to a good start last weekend.

It may be too early in the hockey season to be boasting about a lossless record but the Coquitlam Express' 2012-13 campaign got off to a good start last weekend.

The team notched two road wins, posting back-to-back shutouts during their island visit, defeating the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday and the Cowichan Capitals Sunday.

Scoring was hard to come by in the first game of the season and the Express needed extra time to net the lone goal of the game, coming off the stick of Brady Shaw on a feed from Jason Bird 59 seconds into the overtime period.

Coquitlam goalie Cole Huggins received second star honours, after stopping all 40 Grizzlies shots, while Shaw's goal earned him first star recognition.

On Sunday the Express were able to jump out to an early lead, with Zachary Pryzbek putting the puck past Cowichan goalie Alex Orth two minutes into the opening frame.Mitchell Fyffe added an insurance marker for Coquitlam late in the period on a feed from Mark Begert.

With the lead secured, the Express were able to lock the game down defensively, making it 3-0 after John Siemer scored an empty-netter with a minute left in the game.

Huggins received first star honours for stopping 34 shots he faced, while Pryzbek was awarded second star of the game.

The Express will play their regular season home opener on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against Langley at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre followed by matches on Sept. 21 against Alberni Valley and Sept. 23 against Victoria.
